Introduction to Personal Statements

Session Summary

This session has been designed to introduce students to personal statements and the reasons why they are needed in the university application process. Students will receive ‘top tips’ for writing personal statements and will be encouraged to make a start in planning and drafting their own.

Duration: 2hrs Maximum


Learning Objectives

By the end of the session students will:

  • Understand what a personal statement is and why it is needed
  • Improve self-awareness by reflecting on their own skills, experience, expertise and aspirations, and how these relate to their chosen university course
  • Begin to plan and draft their personal statement
  • Understand the ‘dos and don’ts’ of personal statement writing
  • Be able to identify and take responsibility for goals for future development
